NORTH BRUNSWICK
VOLUNTEER FIRE/LADDER COMPANY #3
THE CHARLES WEYD AWARD
In 1998, the Weyd family started an Annual Award in Memory of their father, Charles Weyd, who was a life member of North Brunswick Volunteer Fire Company #3, active in the North Brunswick Volunteer Fire Department for many, many years until he passed away in 1998. They called it, the Award for Volunteerism, because of his pride in being a "Volunteer". Each year, the family goes to each of the three company Chiefs and ask them for recommendations from their respective fire companies. Based on their recommendations and their knowledge of these individuals, they narrow the list down to 1 person to receive this award. It isnt easy. There are a lot of good people in this fire department, who have gone above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to the fire department. But, they are looking for the extra-special people who give of themselves freely . The person they are looking for is one who works hard for the fire company, gives it his all, but doesnt ask what they can get out of it or expect anything in return, except maybe the feeling of knowing they have helped many people. This person is someone who does what he does because he understands, like their father did, that there are people who need his help.
Jodi, daughter of Charlie says "I remember many nights when my father left the dinner table, or worse yet, left us stranded somewhere, because his plectron went off and he had to get to the call. He taught us what it meant to sacrifice once in awhile because someone else was in need or even in danger. Those were the days of 1 car per family . When my father was Chief, he had lights the size of gumball machines on top of our family vehicle . This was before Chiefs Vehicles were supplied to the Chiefs. Not only couldnt we go anywhere without being noticed, but it meant if he was at a fire call, sometimes for hours at a time, we were stuck without transportation, at the firehouse or elsewhere."
Volunteerism was important to their father Just ask anyone who forgot to include that word when they referred to the fire department . He would surely correct them. It was, and still is, North Brunswick Volunteer Fire Department.
In Memory of Charles Weyd, the following are the past recipients of his award for volunteerism. Members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty as a fireman or as an officer.
